The Price of Liberty is Eternal Vigilance #8: How much government power is too much?

Governments have to have SOME power, but not too MUCH power. A government with too little power cannot govern at all and so we don’t get the benefits a government is supposed to provide. A government with too much power can become tyrannical and infringe on the freedom of the people beyond what is proper and necessary to protect citizens and maintain an orderly society.

One of the endless struggles in the modern history of representative governments is to find the right balance between too little power and too much, between a government that is helpless and a government that is dangerous.

One of the attendees at the US Constitutional Convention in 1787 said the delegates gave the president strong powers, and sometimes not-well-defined powers, because they trusted George Washington, and they knew he was likely going to be the first president of the new country.

In a similar way, I think Americans should look around now, at the current crop of political leaders, and realize that it would be better for us to REDUCE presidential powers.

It is hard for me to understand why, but there was actually just a bill in the House to INCREASE the president’s power!

Autocracy, Inc.: The Dictators Who Want to Run the World

HR 9495 would allow a president to take away a non-profit organization’s tax-exempt status if that organization “supports” terrorism. The problem with the bill is that it doesn’t require the government to tell an affected organization why the decision is being made or what the evidence is that supports the decision.

How could an organization defend itself against an accusation without knowing exactly what the accusation is?

Today this bill was blocked in the House. 204 Republicans voted for this bill and 1 voted against. 52 Democrats voted for this bill and 144 voted against.

Notice that 256 people voted for this bill and only 145 voted against, so, why was it blocked? Due to the rules of the House this particular bill needed a 2/3 vote of 270 to pass and it did not reach 270…. But it came close!

More than 130 tax-exempt organizations, including the ACLU opposed this bill and I think they were right. We shouldn’t want the government to be able to penalize people, or groups of people, or organizations, based on shady and secret accusations and without due process of law.

Sadly, a majority of House members DO want the government to have this power, so I’m afraid we might see some form of this bill revived.

One of the things that should make us suspicious of this bill is that it would give the government power to penalize organizations that are "supporting terrorism," but we should wonder: if the government believes a group is supporting terrorism, why aren’t they bringing criminal charges against it? It almost looks like the government wants power to harass organizations even if they don’t have evidence the organizations committed any crimes at all….

That kind of power would certainly make a great tool for a tyrant.

I believe we are in a time when presidential powers should be reduced and, yes, I did write about this years ago, when a Democrat was moving into the White House.

I am certainly happy this effort to increase presidential power has failed, at least for now. If we want to defend liberty, we should not give the government MORE powers, especially not UNECCESSARY powers, and most especially not SECRET unnecessary powers.

The Price of Liberty is Eternal Vigilance #7: Terminating the Constitution. Piece by Piece.

Trump is not even in office yet and he is already busily trying to terminate rules in the Constitution.

We sure were warned! Trump’s own Vice President four years ago said Trump tried to put himself above the Constitution. Trump’s own Chief of Staff and his Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman BOTH told us he was a fascist. In 2022 Trump himself said the rules of the Constitution should have been terminated to keep him in power after he lost the 2020 election.

Now Trump is at it again.

One of the rules in the Constitution is this one, from the 14th Amendment: “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.”

Trump doesn’t like this rule that anyone born in the United States is a citizen. He says he is going to end this Constitutional right with an executive order.

America’s Constitution: A Biography

Can presidents just eliminate Constitutional rights with executive orders? Can presidents just decide who is a citizen and who isn’t, regardless of what the Constitution says? I don’t think so! But Trump says he will do it anyway.

And that’s just the beginning.

Here is another rule in the Constitution: “He shall have Power, by and with the Advice and Consent of the Senate, to make Treaties, provided two thirds of the Senators present concur; and he shall nominate, and by and with the Advice and Consent of the Senate, shall appoint Ambassadors, other public Ministers and Consuls, Judges of the supreme Court, and all other Officers of the United States, whose Appointments are not herein otherwise provided for, and which shall be established by Law….” Article 2, Section 2, Clause 2

This important clause puts a limit on presidential power by requiring him to get the “Advice and Consent” of the Senate for the appointment of high government officials.

There is an exception to this rule as follows: “The President shall have Power to fill up all Vacancies that may happen during the Recess of the Senate, by granting Commissions which shall expire at the End of their next Session.” Article 2, Section 2, Clause 3

By reading the two clauses above we can see that the normal procedure is for the president to make appointments with the advice and consent of the Senate. If a vacancy occurs when the Senate is in recess the president can make temporary appointments without advice and consent.

Trump has now demanded that the Senate treat ALL of his appointments as recess appointments. This would simply terminate the Constitutional rule requiring the advice and consent of the Senate for presidential appointments and vastly increase the power of presidents to rule like autocrats.

So, Trump wanted to terminate the Constitutional rules that prevented him from staying in office after losing an election. Now he wants to terminate the Constitutional rule that everyone born in the United States is a citizen. Now he also wants to terminate the Constitutional rule that requires presidents to get the advice and consent of the Senate for high level appointments….

I wonder which Constitutional rules he will want to terminate next. Something in the Bill of Rights, maybe?

The Price of Liberty is Eternal Vigilance #6: Will Trump’s Administration Support Freedom in Ukraine?

I am sure Trump will give us plenty to worry about once he takes office, but in the meantime let’s keep our eyes and ears open for signs of what is coming.

During the campaign Trump promised that if he was elected, he would end the war in Ukraine within 24 hours. That would happen even before he took office, he said. It hasn’t happened yet, which is actually a good thing because many people suspect Trump wants to let his hero Putin keep his conquests in Ukraine.

During the campaign Trump said the President of Ukraine was a great salesman for getting aid from the United States, which sure sounds like a hint that aid might stop once Trump is president.

Recently Don Jr. posted a video saying that Ukraine’s allowance is about to be cut off, which also sounds like there is a plan to cut off aid from that country which is currently fighting for its freedom against the Russian dictatorship.

Our Enemies Will Vanish

One of Trump’s campaign advisers recently said that Ukraine will have to accept that the Crimea is gone, meaning Putin will get to keep this territory he invaded back in 2014.

Trump people say this adviser does not speak for the new administration, but they did not contradict his statement that the Crimea is gone, so maybe that campaign adviser speaks the truth.

I would like American presidents to support freedom around the world. Especially when a country like Ukraine is willing to do the fighting for itself if we just supply them with the tools they need to do the job.

If the new president will not support freedom in Ukraine, where else will he not support it?

We should be vigilant and pay attention to this issue.

The Price of Liberty is Eternal Vigilance #5: Floating Race Lines on Buses

If you only believe in freedom and rights for yourself, but not for other people, that is the same thing dictators believe. To really believe in freedom and rights you have to believe in freedom and rights for EVERYBODY.

If the government is leaving your group free, but threatening the rights of others, then, if you really believe in freedom, you have to stand up for those others. In a free country every group should be telling the government: “if you go after them, you are coming after us, and if you go after them, we are going to defend their rights the same way we would defend our own.”

I am reading this great book about the beginnings of the Civil Rights Movement in America. That was a time when most black people did not have freedom or rights, and most white people just ignored the problem. Especially in the Southern states.

This book explains how, for a long time after the Civil War it was a CRIME in many Southern states to teach black people to read. How is that not a dictatorship?

Parting the Waters

This book also explains some about that whole “back of the bus” thing. White people were allowed to sit in the front of the bus, but black people had to sit at the back. But there also had to be separation between them. Drivers would create a “floating line” on the bus to separate white people from black people. As the bus filled up drivers might order a whole row of black people to stand up to make more room for one white person.

Black people couldn’t even walk through the white section of the bus. They had to pay for their tickets at the front and then walk around to the back to reboard the bus in their own section….

How could these black people have been treated so unjustly for so long? How could so many white people have not cared about that injustice for so long? How is that not a dictatorship?

If one person can be deprived of his or her rights without due process of Constitutional laws then no one is free. We all have to stand together and back each other up.

Make sure the laws are Constitutional and make sure the government is following the laws. That’s how we defend liberty and justice for all.

The Price of Liberty is Eternal Vigilance #4: The Danger of Christian Nationalism

This morning, I read an interesting article in the best religious freedom magazine in the world. This article is about a group called the New Apostolic Reformation (NAR) which wants Christianity to dominate society.

The NAR got its start in 1989 when C. Peter Wagner, an expert on church growth, met Cindy Jacobs, who claimed to be a prophet who organized “prayer campaigns to dislodge high-level demons.”

This group believes that God is bringing back prophets and apostles to lead Christians in the modern world. Not surprisingly, Wagner soon decided that he must be one of the new apostles.

Up to this point, I would have no serious problem with this group. I may not agree with their ideas, but they don’t seem dangerous.

In 2001 they started to turn dangerous.

That year, the NAR adopted the Seven Mountain Mandate (7M) idea from Lance Wallnau. This idea is that Christians should aim to dominate all the major institutions of society which are defined as:
Religion,
Government,
Media,
Arts and Entertainment,
Education,
Family,
Business.

The Violent Take it by Force

NOW I have a serious problem with this group. In a free country, no religion, and no other group, should “dominate” the major institutions of society. In a country that believes in freedom of religion, Christianity should not even dominate religion! Christians should live their lives, and other religious people should live their lives, and non-religious people should live their lives, and there should be no talk of any group dominating the others.

Naturally, the NAR has started working its way into politics. According to this article, one of Ted Cruz’s parents is a 7M proponent. Sarah Palin was mentored by an NAR prophet in Alaska. In 2015 the NAR became Trump supporters.

In 2020 various NAR leaders were involved in organizing or encouraging the events that developed into the attack on the Capitol. One NAR speaker in Washington DC on January 6, 2001 said, “We are going to rule and reign through Donald Trump and under the lordship of Jesus Christ.”

I think anyone who talks about ruling and reigning does not really understand the American system of government and is not a defender of freedom for all. These words are especially bizarre coming from a follower of the man who said, “My kingdom is not of this world.”

For people who want to be free, the NAR is a dangerous group. Be vigilant!

The Price of Liberty is Eternal Vigilance #3: How is the Biden Economy Doing in September 2024?

One of the most important weapons in the struggle to preserve liberty is TRUTH. Dictators lie all the time. People who know the truth are better able to protect their freedom than people who do not know the truth.

Dictators will tell you:

  1. You have a huge problem or you are in terrible danger!
  2. I am the only one who can save you!
  3. I can only save you if you give me extraordinary powers like, maybe, suspending the rules of the Constitution, or giving me immunity so I can commit crimes in office!

Usually ALL of these claims are lies. But when the people in a country fall for this con job, they end up with a dictator.

The Federalist Papers

A wannabe dictator, for example, might tell you that when his opponents are in power the economy is terrible. When he is in power he will say his economy is the greatest economy the world has ever seen, even if it is really no better than it was before. Even if it is worse than it was before….

How can you tell if an economy is good or bad? Do a quick search online to find out what are considered good ranges for three of the most important economic numbers:

  1. Change in Gross Domestic Product or GDP, which is a measure of economic growth. A good range for GDP growth is 2%-3%. (Personally, I would prefer 2.5% to 3.5%, but I am not a professional economist….)
  2. Unemployment Rate. Generally, 3% to 5% is considered good.
  3. Inflation Rate. The US target for inflation is to be close to 2% and to average 2% over time.

Yesterday I looked at GDP growth from the Bureau of Economic Analysis. In the 2nd quarter of 2024 GDP growth was 3.0%. That is in the good range. The advance number for the 3rd quarter of 2024 is 2.8%. Also in the good range.

Yesterday I looked at the unemployment rate from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In both September and October of 2024, the unemployment rate was at 4.1%. Those numbers are in the good range.

Yesterday I looked at the inflation rate from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In September of 2024, inflation was at 2.4%, which is pretty close to the ideal target of 2%.

Right now, economic growth, unemployment, and inflation, are all good in the United States. Right now the US economy is doing good.

If anyone tells you right now that the US economy is doing badly… they are lying to you.

The Price of Liberty is Eternal Vigilance #2: How to Defend Freedom

Trump is the president-elect. That is sad news for me, but it’s the truth.

And you know, one thing that makes me proud to be a Democrat is that Democrats accept the truth.

Kamala and Biden have already admitted that Trump won, and they have promised there will be a peaceful transfer of power.

Remember when Trump admitted he lost and promised a peaceful transfer of power in 2020? No! You don’t remember that. Because he never did that….

Kamala’s and Biden’s willingness to admit they lost, and their promise to support the peaceful transfer of power are two of the things that make them responsible and respectable adults.

Trump’s refusal to admit he lost in 2020, and his efforts to gum up the peaceful transfer of power that year are two of the things that make him a dangerous baby….

Strongmen: Mussolini to the Present.

Nevertheless, Trump is the president-elect. In the United States the people as a whole, through the Electoral College, decide who is president, and the people have chosen Trump.

We all have to accept that Trump will be the next president.

Of course, that doesn’t mean we have to roll over and let our liberties be taken away from us!

Millions of Americans believe the new president will be a danger to freedom in this country. If that is true, then we have the right to defend ourselves whether he was rightly elected or not. The right to vote for a president comes every four years. The right to defend our liberties comes every single minute of every single day.

Some ways we can defend our liberties are to:

  1. Write social media posts, and share social media posts, and “like” social media posts that we agree with
  2. Add comments to online articles to express our agreement or disagreement with what is said
  3. Write letters to editors
  4. Write to our elected representatives
  5. Petition Congress for a redress of grievances
  6. Boycott companies that support threats to our freedoms
  7. Participate in peaceful protests
  8. Donate money to Democratic candidates and to the National, State, and Local Democratic parties, or to groups like the ACLU that will fight for freedom
  9. Go to court! Just like Trump used legal delaying tactics to keep himself out of prison, we have every right to use legal delaying tactics to defend our liberties
  10. Go to our town or county political meetings and get involved in helping to find solutions to problems
  11. As the next elections approach, donate as much time and money as we can to helping Democrats win back congressional seats in 2026 and to make sure the Whitehouse does not go to a "new" Trump in 2028

Most importantly:

  • Learn the facts about the issues and prepare your arguments to combat misinformation and lies
  • Tell the truth
  • Use peaceful means
  • Never give up!

Trump will be the next president. Now let’s keep our freedoms safe until he is gone!

The Price of Liberty is Eternal Vigilance #1: The ACLU Defends Freedom

The Sedition Act of 1918 “forbad the use of ‘disloyal, profane, scurrilous, or abusive language;’ about the United States Government….” This law appears to be a wildly unconstitutional violation of freedom of speech, but it was passed by Congress, signed into law by a President, and upheld by the Supreme Court.

That is how easy it is for freedom to die….

One person who was prosecuted under the Sedition Act was Eugene Debs, who was arrested for making an anti-war speech in Canton, Ohio. He was convicted of sedition and sentenced to 10 years in prison in 1919. Ten years in prison for making a speech!

Fortunately, the Sedition Act was repealed by a new Congress in 1920. Eugene Debs was released from prison by a new president in 1921.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and its predecessor, the CLB, were started to fight against bad laws like the Sedition Act of 1918.

The Dieri People of Southeast Australia

There is an interesting case study about the Dieri people of Southeast Australia.

The descriptions of Dieri culture and religion in this book are taken from the writings of A.W. Howitt, an Australian anthropologist, naturalist, and explorer, who studied the Dieri in the 1860s.
The book notes that there has been much erosion of the traditional Dieri culture since the 1860s.

The Dieri live in an area that is very dry, and usually very hot, and with only scattered trees.
In the hot weather the people wear only "hip girdles."
In the rare times when the weather turns uncomfortably cold they wear kangaroo, wallaby, or opossum skins.

There are scattered tribes of Dieri, each with its own territory and its own dialect.
These people did not grow food or domesticate any animals.
They were food gatherers and hunters.

Dieri hunters used spears with separate spear-heads made from hardwood or flaked stone.
The spearheads could be barbed and the spears were hurled with throwing sticks.
The Dieri used knives and axes made of chipped stone and they invented two different types of boomerangs, one of which could return to the thrower if used properly.

The different Dieri tribes interacted with each other from time to time.
Sometimes they work cooperatively together, but sometimes there are hostile interactions as well.

Like almost all groups in human history, except for some royal families in Egypt and modern Europe, the Dieri noticed that marriages between close relatives often led to unhealthy children.
To deal with this they divided themselves into two classes: the Matteri and the Kararu.
The Matteri were then further divided into totem groups such as the caterpillars, cormorants, emus, eagles, hawks, and wild dogs.
The Kararu were divided into totem groups such as the carpet snakes, crows, rats, frogs, bats, shrew mice, red ochre, and even rain.

No Dieri could marry a person from their own totem group and, in fact, it appears they could not even marry a person from their own class.
A Matteri person had to marry a Kararu person and vice versa.
You got your totem membership from your mother so, if your mother was an eagle, you would be an eagle too.

The oldest man in each totem was the headman.
The group of all headmen took the lead in important matters like initiation ceremonies.

Part 2

The Dieri believed in supernatural beings called the "kutchi."

They also believed that before the Dieri inhabited the land there was a superhuman race living there called the "mura-muras."

To communicate with the kutchi, or the spirits of the mura-muras, the Dieri would consult with a kind of medicine man called a "kunki."
A kunki could also interpret dreams, counteract evil spells, or drive out evil spirits.

In extreme cases a kunki could even kill people by projecting objects such as quartz crystals or bones right into their bodies.
A kunki could also kill people by secretly stealing their body fat.
The body fat could then be used to perform other magical rituals.

The Dieri did not believe that death was a natural event.
Death was always caused by someone.
As we saw above, death could be caused by a kunki.
Death could also be caused by one of the supernatural beings, the kutchi.

Of course, in addition to death, sickness could also be caused by the kutchi, or by some spell.
If a sickness was caused by the kutchi then a kunki could try to communicate with the kutchi and drive out the illness.

Sickness could also be caused by two enemies of the sick person using a ritual called "pointing of the bone."
In this ritual the enemies would point a human shinbone at the victim and recite a magical spell to make the victim sick.

When a person was sick, or when a person died, the relatives of the deceased could consult with a kunki to find out who caused the sickness or death.

Once the guilty party, or parties, were identified, the tribal council would appoint a "pinya" or revenge party to track down the perpetrators and either kill them or, at least, give them a severe beating.

Part 3

The Dieri live in a very dry place where there are frequent droughts.
They believe that supernatural beings called Mura-Mura live in the sky and put rain into the clouds.
If, for some reason, the Mura-Mura fail to do this the medicine men of the tribe conduct the ceremony intended to make it rain.

When this ceremony is needed the tribe digs a pit two feet deep, twelve feet long, and eight to ten feet wide.
Over the pit they build a hut out of sticks and branches.
The old men of the tribe sit in this hut while a medicine man cuts them with a piece of flint.
The men who are cut then drip or spatter their blood on the other men in the hut.
These drops of blood are supposed to symbolize rain.
A couple of the medicine men, who are also bleeding by this time, throw down into the air and this is supposed to symbolize clouds.

While all this is going on people are begging the Mura-Mura to end the drought and send the rain.

At the end of the ceremony the men keep head-butting the hut until it is broken open and collapses.
This is supposed to release the rain.

If the rain still doesn't come after this ceremony, it might be assumed that the Mura-Mura are angry with the tribe for some reason.
Alternatively, and perhaps more ominously, it might be concluded that some other tribe has found a way to block the success of the ritual.

Part 4

The Dieri believed that, in the evening, the sun sank into a hole in the earth in the west.
During the night the sun traveled underground to get back to its rising point in the east.

The Dieri believed the sky was another country with trees and rivers similar to those on earth.
They called the Milky Way "the river of the sky."
The sky was thought of as a good place inhabited by supernatural beings called mura-muras and by the souls of the dead.

Sometimes the dead would return to the earth and visit people in their dreams.
When a person dreamed of someone who had died a witch doctor would decide if this was just a normal dream, of no particular significance, or if it was a real visit from a spirit.

If it was a real visit the witch doctor would instruct the person who had the dream to go to the grave of the dead person and light a fire and leave some food.
This was a kind of appeasement to prevent the spirit from causing any harm to the living.

The Dieri had an interesting ritual for increasing the population of carpet snakes and lizards which were part of their diet.
They believed that a mura-mura named Minkani was buried in the sandhills where these reptiles lived.

Women would wait in the camp while the men whose totems were the carpet snakes and lizards would go to the sandhill and dig down until they got to damp earth.
They would dig a little more until they found something they identified as the "excrement" of Minkani.
Then they dug more carefully until they uncovered something they identified as Minkani's "elbow."

Then two men would stand in the hole and cut themselves to drip blood on Minkani.
A special song was sung.
The men then began walking back to camp in a kind of frenzy, striking each other with their weapons.

The women would rush out to meet the men and hold shields over their husbands to protect them and put a stop to the fighting.
With the ceremony complete the Dieri hoped there would be more carpet snakes and lizards for them to eat.

The information in this book is based on reports from a person who visited the Dieri in the 1860s before they were much influenced by European culture.
The book says the Dieri live much differently now than they did when these observations were made.
Of course, we all live much differently now than people did 160 years ago….

Things change.
I hope they change for the better.

Part 5

This section is about the death rituals of the Dieri people of Australia.
Some of the details did not seem entirely clear to me from the book I am reading but I am trying here to summarize what I read as accurately as possible.
Also, at least one of these rituals will likely seem "gross" to many modern westerners.
So, fair warning....

When a Dieri aborigine was dying the relatives would divide up into two groups.
The first group included the father, if he was still alive, and the father's brothers with their children.
The second group included the mother, if she was still alive, and the mother's sisters and brothers, as well as the dying person's sisters and brothers.

The mother's group would stay at a distance from the dying person.
This group was very careful not to look into the face of the dying person because his or her longing might draw them in and then they would die also.
The father's group would stay near the dying person and even throw themselves onto the body as the person expired.

Once the person had passed away the father's group would go into mourning and paint themselves with white gypsum.
The men from the mother's group would dig the grave and paint themselves with red ochre.

As two men carried the body to the grave they would ask the deceased who had killed him or her.
Then they would drop the body on the ground and study the way it landed to see if there were any clues about who had caused the death.
(The Dieri did not believe death was natural. They believed death was always the result of some malicious purpose.)

When the body was placed in the grave a maternal grandfather or cousin would cut pieces of fat from the body.
Certain relatives would eat this fat while others would not.
Mothers would eat the fat of their children while fathers would not.
Children would eat the fat of their mother but not of their father.
And so on, according to a complex set of rules about who eats who.

When the grave was filled in, a stack of wood was placed on top of it.
Some of the Dieri were very afraid that the dead would rise up and walk around.
To prevent this they might tie the toes and thumbs of the corpse together.
If the deceased person was an influential member of the tribe, food would be left at the grave for many days.
If the weather was cold a fire would be kept burning near the grave to keep the spirit warm and comfortable.
The tribe might also sweep the ground around the grave and then go back periodically to check for footprints.
If they found footprints they would assume the dead person was not happy with his or her resting place and they would move the body to a new grave.

Once the deceased was resting comfortably the tribe would move to a new camp and never speak of the dead person again to avoid causing any offense.

The first studies of the Dieri by Europeans, back in the 1800s, did not get much information about their beliefs in a supreme God, or about how the world began.
Later anthropologists believe the Dieri may not have felt like sharing their views on such questions, but that they probably had beliefs similar to those of other indigenous people in Australia.

Generally, the aborigines believed that everything began in a period of formlessness and unconsciousness, a period of chaos.
From this chaos Dawn Beings appeared spontaneously without being created.
This happened in a period called Dreamtime.
The chief Dawn Being was the High God or The Old Man of the Sky.
This being is sometimes referred to as “Our Father.”
I can’t tell from this book if the High God was thought of as eternally existing or if he was thought to have arisen spontaneously during Dreamtime like the other Dawn Beings.

The Dawn Beings shaped the earth and all the living creatures on it from the pre-existing chaos. After the world was created the High God gave newly created people the customs and rituals they were expected to follow.
Then he ascended to the Sky Country while many, or all, of the other Dawn Beings, stayed on the earth to establish totemic centers, presumably one totemic center for each group of human beings.

When young men were initiated, they were taught the secret names of the High God that women and children were not allowed to know.

Some Australian tribes believe the High God is remote and takes little interest in human beings.
Some tribes believe the High God watches over human beings very closely.

So, that’s all I have for the Dieri people of Australia.
I will put my six posts together, do a little light editing, and put the end result on my blog which I have been sadly neglecting!
This is really just reading notes strung together into sentences and paragraphs, but I hope it is interesting to some people. 😊

For my next culture / religion project I might write about the Benda or Venda people of South Africa.

Rehoboam and Nixon, Two Jerks!

It was cool and damp in Inverness, Florida this morning.
This is the first winter of my life that I came down to Florida to escape from the snow and ice of the northeast.
I think that was a good idea!
So I made hot coffee and settled down in my comfy chair to read for awhile.

I read from 1 Kings 12 where the people ask Rehoboam if he will rule over them less oppressively than his father Solomon had.
Rehoboam tells the people that his father chastised them with whips but he will chastise them with scorpions!
What the...?

That Rehoboam was a real jerk!

The ten northern tribes decided to rebel against Rehoboam and serve Jeroboam instead.
Rehoboam, whose jerkiness was only exceeded by his stupidity, sent the tax collector Adoram to the Northern tribes to collect tribute.
As anyone with half a brain might have predicted the tribes of Israel stoned Adoram with stones until he died....

So then the people of Israel were divided into the Northern kingdom of Israel and the Southern Kingdom of Judah.
This happened about 930 BC.

Interesting story.

Then I read from Hunter S. Thompson's classic book about the presidential campaign of 1972.
This was the campaign where Nixon was reelected.
Nixon was kind of a jerk too.
He had so little respect for the law that he needed a pardon from Ford after he left office or he probably would have ended up in jail with several other members of his administration.

At least Nixon went peacefully in the end.
He was a jerk, but he did leave office peacefully....
Give him a little credit for that.

Coffee Post – Sun., February 4, 2024

When I sit up in bed here in Florida and turn to the left and look out the window there, I can see a palm tree through the blinds.
I am quite sure there is no window in my New York house through which I can see a palm tree….

Be that as it may, it is time to drink coffee and read books and watch the world to see what is happening.

I have run out of coffee pods so I had some Folger’s instant coffee this morning.
That will keep me going.
But I think I will go to the store and look for coffee pods today.

Betelgeuse

I read from a book called “Stargazing.”
It recommends an app called Stellarium for locating stars and other heavenly objects.
I have used this app and it is a very handy one.
Lately, every time I go out after dark I look for the constellation Orion and the great star Betelgeuse.
Betelgeuse is a red supergiant that makes Orion’s right shoulder.
(That is the shoulder on the left as we look at Orion from earth.)
I like to look at Betelgeuse whenever I can because it is expected to explode any day now….
Well, within 100,000 years anyway.
But a few days or 100,000 years are both blinks of an eye in astronomical terms.

King Charles I

I read from a biography of King Charles I.
In 1640 some of the King’s top counsellors wanted to accuse certain members of Parliament of treason for conspiring with the Scots to invade England.
To protect themselves, members of Parliament accused some of the King’s top counsellors of treason and had them arrested.

When you live in a monarchy, or a dictatorship, political ethics can become very confused.
Who are you supposed to be loyal to?
Who are you supposed to oppose?

In England around 1640 Parliament wanted to limit the rights of Catholics because they were afraid Catholic powers like France and Spain wanted to conquer England.
At the same time the King wanted to limit the rights of everyone so he could rule unopposed.
Whose side should we be on?
It gets confusing….

One thing I believe, illegitimate rulers who try to rule without being chosen by the people - they are always traitors!
Always!

I hate dictators.

Hunter S. Thompson

I read from a biography of the Gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson.
Hunter did some great writing, but he destroyed his talent with excessive indulgence in alcohol and drugs.

He thought the alcohol and drugs were helping him, but they weren’t. He thought he was living wild and free, but really he was just serving his addictions.

Hunter was in his prime for maybe 5-10 years and then there was a long, slow, fading away. Sometimes Hunter was headed in the right direction, but, as an extremist, he never knew when to stop, or at least turn back toward the middle of the road, so even when he started off in the right direction, he would end up in the wrong place in the end.

I want to learn from his best writing.

Unlike him, I will remember to stay on the road and not go careening off into the ditches.

United States Attacked

I see on the news that a US logistics base in Jordan was attacked last weekend and three American soldiers were killed and more than 30 injured.
The attack used a drone launched by an Iranian-backed group, probably in Syria.

I don’t know if US troops should be in Jordan, but that is a question for the US and Jordan to answer and Iranian-backed militants in Syria should have nothing to say about it.

The US and its allies have now launched dozens of attacks against Iranian-backed groups in Syria, Iraq, and Yemen.
These attacks are intended to degrade the military capabilities of groups that might want to attack the US, and to deter them.
I think that is the right response.
I hope it works.

If it doesn’t work, and if we have to, I suppose we can move from degrading capabilities to utterly destroying them.
But let’s hope this effort to deter is successful.

OK.
It is raining here now.
I think I will wander around a bit.
Find some coffee pods.
Find some brunch.
Find a different place to read….

Why America can NEVER Have an Official Religion

With the dangerous rise of “Christian” Nationalism in the United States I suppose there are going to be more and more yahoos yammering about how the US is supposed to be a Christian country.

The first problem with that idea is that it can’t be true unless we throw out the Constitution.
Which is a pretty serious problem, you have to admit!
The very first clause in the very first amendment of the Bill of Rights says: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion...”

Obviously, if Congress cannot make any law respecting an establishment of religion, then our national government cannot make one religion the “official” religion for the country.
And if our government cannot make one religion the official religion for the country then what does it even mean to say that we are supposed to have a Christian nation?

If it just means that lots of Americans are Christians then that is fine.
Americans can belong to any religion they choose.
But if it means the government is supposed to establish, or protect, or promote, one religion, or one religion’s doctrines, over others, that is WRONG, and that is a direct violation of our Constitution.

Now, it is true that some STATES had established religions at the time the Constitution was ratified.
This was a holdover from colonial times when, often, there was very little freedom of religion in the United States.
(Massachusetts Puritans used to hang Quakers on Boston Common after all!)

The Constitution of 1789 was a fresh start for America in many ways, not least of which was by providing a guarantee that the new Federal government would not meddle in religious matters, or elevate one religion to a preferred status over others.

The fact that states could still have established religions was a serious gap, though.
What good is talking about freedom of religion if states can take it away from you?
To be fair, most states had protections for freedom of religion in their own state constitutions and state laws, it is just that the Federal government had no authority to FORCE states to respect freedom of religion if they decided to go rogue and start hanging Quakers again….
Or forcing people to go to church on a certain day of the week.
Or killing witches.
Or whatever.

Fortunately for freedom, when the Fourteenth Amendment was ratified in 1868, the Federal government was given important new powers over the states.
The Supreme Court used those new powers in a 1947 case called Everson v. Board of Education to apply the establishment clause of the First Amendment to state and local governments.

From the very beginning of the United States the Constitution has guaranteed that there cannot be a NATIONAL religion.
Since 1947 the Federal government has also guaranteed that there cannot be any STATE, or COUNTY, or CITY, or TOWN religions either.

So, if you hear someone saying that anyone in the United States can be a Christian, or even that everyone in the United States can be a Christian - if that is what they choose - that is absolutely true.
But if you hear some yammering yahoo saying that the United States is supposed to be a Christian NATION that is absolutely false.

Please remind people with such dangerous ideas of the very first clause of the very first amendment of the Bill of Rights which says: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion...”

"Trump asked me to put him over the Constitution." - Mike Pence

You don’t really know what someone is like unless you spend time with them, work with them maybe. If you can’t spend time with someone then the only way you can know them is by listening to other people who DID spend time with them.

If we really want to know Trump, for example, we could listen to his 2016 running mate who then served as his Vice President for four years, Mike Pence. There can’t be many people who know Trump better than Mike Pence does.

So, what does Mike Pence think about Trump?

In September 2023 Pence gave a speech where he discussed the political philosophy of Trump and his imitators in the Republican party. He said, “The growing faction would substitute our faith in limited government and traditional values with an agenda stitched together by little else than personal grievances and performative outrage.”

Pence knows that Trump and his followers are not true conservatives who believe in “limited government” and “traditional values.” Instead of campaigning on these principles, Pence reminds us, Trump and his cronies whip up their crowds with “personal grievances” and “performative outrage.”

We know that Pence is right about Trump not believing in limited government. Trump has claimed that a president should have breathtaking powers, extending all the way to assassinating political rivals with impunity. There is nothing limited about the powers Trump wants for himself and his government. He wants the power of life and death over American citizens just like any ancient despot or any medieval king claiming divine right demanded for himself.

Remember what Trump said in a speech to conservative students in July 2019? "Then I have an Article II, where I have the right to do whatever I want as president, but I don't even talk about that." It would be good if Trump did NOT talk about Article II of the Constitution because that does NOT say the president can do whatever he wants. But that is what Trump WISHES that it said, because Trump does not believe in limited government as long as HE is the one in power.

Pence is also correct when he warns us that Trump does not believe in traditional values. Any one who has been found liable in courts of law for sexual abuse, repeated defamation of his sexual abuse victim, and years of business fraud, certainly does not believe in traditional values.

And anyone who doesn’t believe Mike Pence when he says Trump’s campaign is driven by personal grievances only has to listen to the ex-president for five minutes. There is currently no one in America - over three years of age - who whines and complains more about how unfair everyone is to him than Trump does. He is a billionaire and a former president who loves insulting people and calling them names, but isn’t it so terrible how people can be so mean to HIM?

Mike Pence knows Trump very well. He knows Trump is NOT a conservative, does NOT believe in traditional values, and seems to be able to whine just about non-stop for 20 hours per day.

But there are far worse things about Trump than his lack of conservatism, his lack of respect for traditional values, and his unbearable, endless, infantile whininess….

At a Gridiron Dinner Mike Pence said: “President Trump was wrong. I had no right to overturn the election. And his reckless words endangered my family and everyone at the Capitol that day, and I know history will hold Donald Trump accountable.”

There are a couple of really shocking points made in this quote.

First of all, Mike Pence is telling us straight out that Trump wanted to overturn the 2020 election. There may be Trump supporters who refuse to believe that Trump wanted to overturn an American election, there may even be Trump supporters who are so far lost to what America stands for that they don’t even care about elections anymore, but Mike Pence KNOWS Trump tried to overturn that election, and Mike Pence is still American enough to know that was WRONG.

Secondly, Mike Pence is telling us here that it was Trump who was responsible for the violence at the Capitol on January 6, 2021. Mike Pence knows it was Trump’s “reckless” words that inflamed a mob to attack the Capitol of the United States of America. Trump supporters can pretend that Trump did not whip that angry crowd into a fighting frenzy, or maybe some Trump supporters are so lost to what America stands for that they no longer even care if their political leader inspires violence, but Mike Pence knows it was Trump who put his own Vice President and his Vice President’s family in danger on that shameful day.

And for people who think that maybe, in spite of all his despicable flaws, somehow, deep down inside, Trump really does respect our American Constitution, here Mike Pence drives the nail into that coffin by telling us what Trump really wanted on January 6, 2021.

According to Mike Pence, “The American people deserve to know that President Trump and his advisers didn't just ask me to pause. They asked me to reject votes, return votes, essentially to overturn the election," and "On that day, President Trump asked me to put him over the Constitution. But I chose the Constitution and I always will.”

That lays it out as clear as day, doesn’t it? Trump wanted the 2020 election overturned and he wanted the Vice President to put Trump’s desires above the Constitution. On January 6, 2021 Trump tried to carry out a coup d’etat and seize illegitimate power in the United States of America. It is probably ONLY because of Vice President Mike Pence that Trump’s evil schemes failed.

Mike Pence has known and worked with Trump for years. He certainly knows Trump better than any of us who only see him on TV. He has warned us over and over again that Trump is a bad and dangerous man who should never be president again.

An American Citizen Tries to Understand the Border Crisis

I feel like American citizens should be able to understand the problem at the Southern border and asylum law and stuff like that.
I hope that is true.
Let's give it a try and do the best we can!

The material in this blog post was written when it looked like there might be, just possibly, a deal for a new border law in Congress.
Later, of course, that deal fell through.
Anyway, that's when this was written, when it looked like there might be a deal.

President Joe Biden has been negotiating for weeks with Senate Republicans about getting more tools to deal with the surge of migrants across the southern border.
One thing Biden wants is authority to shut down the border if more than 5000 migrants cross in one day.

Why is Biden asking for authority to shut down the border?
Because currently the law does NOT give the president that authority!
(By the way, states do not have any legal or Constitutional authority to shut down the border either.)
Most people don’t know this, but if anyone says the president should shut down the border now, they are actually saying the president should break the law.
Which is unacceptable.

I have many ideas about what I would try to do at the border if I were president, but in the current situation I hope the Congress will give Biden the tools he needs to manage the border more effectively WITHOUT breaking US asylum law.

Below I will give a reference to current US asylum law as I understand it.
If anyone thinks I am wrong, please give me a reference showing how I am wrong so I can learn.

Now, here is the law.
We should expect presidents to obey this law, or we should expect Congress to change it.
One or the other.
We should certainly NOT be asking a president, or a state, to break this law.

US Asylum Law: “Any alien who is physically present in the United States or who arrives in the United States (whether or not at a designated port of arrival and including an alien who is brought to the United States after having been interdicted in international or United States waters), irrespective of such alien’s status, may apply for asylum in accordance with this section or, where applicable, section 1225(b) of this title.”

And finally, here is some information about keeping asylum seekers in another country while they wait for their asylum hearing in the US.
US asylum law does allow us to have asylum seekers wait in another country, but there are three conditions:

  1. The country they are going to stay in has to agree.
  2. The country they are going to stay in has to be safe for asylum seekers.
  3. The asylum seekers have to be able to get into the US when it is time for their asylum hearings.

Groups like the ACLU say that conditions 2 and 3 were never met, which would mean the remain in Mexico policy was never legal.
There were court cases about these issues since the policy began, but I don't believe these court cases were ever resolved.
Now, since February 2023, Mexico does not agree to keep asylum seekers in Mexico so that is another reason why the remain in Mexico policy would now be illegal, even if it was legal before.

Personally, I think we should build shelters along the border where we can hold people seeking asylum in a safe and secure place.
Then we should increase the number of immigration judges and staff so the asylum claims can be quickly reviewed.
People who meet the conditions would come into the US and people who do not meet the conditions would go home.

To do this we need Congress to approve funding for the shelters and the additional judges and staff.

More long term, we should see if we can help improve conditions in the countries the migrants are coming from so they would rather stay home. I assume we could do this with mutually beneficial economic deals with those countries. That way, we make money, they make money, and people can have better lives without leaving home.

That’s what I would like to see.

Our Biggest Problem is not Left vs. Right, it is Lawful vs. Lawless

It looks like the Hawaii Supreme Court is coming close to defying the United States Supreme Court.
A guy was arrested for carrying a gun on someone else’s property.
This guy claimed he had a right to carry that gun based on recent Supreme Court decisions such as “New York State Rifle and Pistol Association, Inc. v. Bruen” (2022), and “District of Columbia v. Heller” (2008).

Now, I want to emphasize here that I don’t believe either Heller or Bruen say anybody has the right to carry a gun on someone else’s property. You don’t actually have the right to be on someone else’s property at all.

I don’t think either Heller or Bruen say that there is a right to carry a gun in public without a permit, either.
Bruen seems to say explicitly that a state can require that people have a permit to carry a gun in public, it just requires that the criteria for getting the permit has to be “objective” and not “arbitrary.”
Whatever that means….

Given the above, I think the Hawaii Supreme Court could have just said there is no right in Hawaii to carry a gun in public without a permit, and there is nothing in Heller or Bruen to say otherwise, so this man’s conviction stands, and there would not be any problem.

The problem is that the Hawaii Supreme Court, with 3 Democratic appointees and 2 Republican appointees, agreed unanimously to say that the United States Supreme Court was wrong in Heller and Bruen and they seem to be implying that Hawaii does not have to obey the Supreme court’s decisions in these opinions.

If that is what the Hawaii Supreme Court is saying, they are wrong, wrong, wrong!

In the United States of America, you don’t get to decide which laws or court decisions you will obey and which you will not obey, unless you are ready to go to jail - not even if you are a state supreme court. In this country, if you don’t like laws or court decisions, then you go and you VOTE! And while you are voting, you obey the law or you go to jail.

It looks like Texas Governor Greg Abott is coming close to defying the United States Supreme Court. Recently a lower court said that Federal officials could not remove razor wire placed along the border by Texas. The United States Supreme Court reversed that decision implying, without explanation, that Federal officials CAN remove razor wire to get to the border.

The Supreme Court did not explain, but it is not hard to understand this decision. After the American Revolution the states controlled their own borders with taxes and fees and rules about what could cross their borders and what could not. This caused so much trouble that it was disagreements about border rules that was the BIGGEST reason the Constitutional Convention was eventually called. I do not believe it is an exaggeration to say that the BIGGEST reason the United States of America was formed was to STOP states from controlling their own borders.

It is the Federal government that controls “interstate commerce” and it is the Federal government that controls all matters involving foreign countries. Any state that interferes in these issues is violating the United States Constitution. That is why people now who say that states have a right to control their own borders are completely, 180 degrees, upside-down, wrong.

So far it looks like Greg Abbott is not in DIRECT violation of a Supreme Court decision. But if he does violate a Supreme Court decision, he will be wrong, wrong, wrong.

In the United States of America, you don’t get to decide which laws or court decisions you will obey and which you will not obey unless you are ready to go to jail – not even if you are a state governor. In this country, if you don’t like laws or court decisions, then you go and you VOTE! And while you are voting, you obey the law or you go to jail.

We need to come down hard on people who break the law or who advocate breaking the law. We have rights to speak and write and peacefully protest and VOTE about things we don’t like. (And if somebody says they want a revolution like we had in 1775 you remind them that what justified that revolution was that those Americans did NOT have the right to vote in their national government. We do!)

Hundreds of thousands of Americans died so we could have these rights. People who now want to throw these rights away by advocating lawlessness (like, maybe the Hawaii Supreme Court, or like, maybe Texas Governor Abbott) are betraying some of the most basic principles America stands for: like the rule of law, and the right of the people to make laws that everyone has to obey. People who oppose these principles need to be educated and corrected, or ridiculed and reviled, or arrested and prosecuted to the full extent of the law, before they ruin this great country for those of us who are still responsible and sane.

If you don’t like what is happening in this country then you speak and you write and you VOTE! And if you don’t get the laws you want, then welcome to what it means to live in a free country where you don’t get to be the dictator.

Coffee Post - February 11, 2024

Many things I want to do today, but let’s start by drinking coffee, reading books, and watching the world to see what is happening.

The American Revolution

I read from a wonderful big book called “The Glorious Cause.”
This is the volume about the American Revolution in the multi-volume set called The Oxford History of America.

The book describes English politics in the middle 1700s as extremely conservative, in the sense that it seemed to be the primary purpose of government to make sure that NOTHING CHANGES AT ALL!

This was probably a reaction to the tumultuous 1600s when there were civil wars and kings dethroned and one king beheaded… and so on.

Art History for Dummies

I read from Art History for Dummies about the ancient period called “Hellenistic” which came after Alexander the Great died in 323 BC.

Before “Hellenism” was the “Classical” period, which was characterized by calm, elegant, confident works of art.
The Hellenistic period, especially known for architecture, portrayed more of the grittiness of life - pain, and suffering, and death.

One of the famous Hellenistic works is called “Laocoon and His Sons.”
This was based on the story of Laocoon, who warned the Trojans not to accept the giant horse brough by the Greeks.
The horse was, of course, a trick to conquer Troy, and Athena, who wanted the Greeks to win, was angry at Laocoon for warning the Trojans, so she sent two giant sea serpents to kill him and his sons.
The statue shows the snakes attacking the men and writhing around them and the men struggling and suffering in the coils of the serpents.
There is no classical calm in this statue!

The book calls classical art “self-deluded,” which seems a little harsh!
I think, just as Plato distinguished between a perfect and eternal world of Being and a flawed and changing world of Becoming, it might make sense to view classical art as trying to capture the world of Being while Hellenistic art turned its attention to the world of Becoming.

Classical art was not self-deluded, it was just looking at a different aspect of reality than Hellenistic art was.

There really is a world of Being after all.
Whether it is outside of us as Plato thought, or inside of us as Aristotle thought, there really is a world of Being.

When the Going Gets Weird....

I read from a biography of Hunter S. Thompson who invented “gonzo” journalism in the 1960s.
During one period Hunter traveled through South America writing about everything he saw and heard and selling many of those pieces for $150 a pop back in the United States.

I would like to travel all along the U.S.-Mexican border writing about everything I see and hear there. I suspect there might be lots of good food along that border and lots of opportunities to brush up on my Spanish.
Lots of suffering too.
Lots to think about.
Lots to write about.
I wonder if I could do that next winter….

Satanism in Iowa

I see in the news that a Christian destroyed a legally displayed Satanic statue in the Iowa state capital. I guess this Christian doesn’t believe in freedom of religion. I guess he doesn’t believe in keeping his hands off other people’s property either.

This Christian thinks he’s the good guy, but he’s not. He believes he should be able to take away other people’s religious freedom and destroy their property. There’s nothing more evil than that….

Creeping Dictatorship in the USA

In every free country there are people who would throw freedom away if it means they could be in power.
There are people in the United States right now who would like to live in a dictatorship if it means they could be in power.

I just heard my congressperson Elise Stefanik say she would not have done what Mike Pence did on January 6, 2021.
What did Mike Pence do on January 6?
He counted the electoral votes sent in by the states, as he was required to do BY LAW.

Elise Stefanik is saying she would have broken the law.

But how could Elise justify breaking the law?
She says she thinks there were illegal or unconstitutional violations committed during the 2020 election.
That sounds serious!
Could that be true?
And, if so, what should we do about it?

Obviously, if people think there were illegal or unconstitutional violations during an election they should go to court.
And that is exactly what happened.
The Trump campaign filed about 60 court cases after the 2020 election and NOT ONE of them found evidence of election violations that could have changed the outcome of the election.

Elise Stefanik is saying that she would have ignored 60 court cases that found no evidence of election wrongdoing that could have affected the outcome of the election, and THEN, based only on her wishes, she would have broken the law that requires electoral votes to be counted on Jan. 6.

But WHY would she have done something so extreme?

Because she knew Biden won the election - and she didn’t WANT Biden to win the election.
Trump and his supporters KNEW the electoral votes sent in by the states would give the presidency to Biden.
That’s why they didn’t want those electoral votes counted on January 6 in accordance with the law.
Trump and his supporters KNEW that 60 court cases had failed to find evidence of any outcome-changing fraud during the election.
That’s why they wanted people to ignore those court cases and act on their emotions and desires rather than on the law.

Elise Stefanik said she would not have done what Pence did.
She would have ignored the 60 court cases, she would have broken the law requiring the electoral votes be counted, and she would have done that just because she wanted to keep Trump in power even after she knew he lost the election…

Recently Trump has “joked” about wanting to be a dictator and he has seriously argued in court that presidents should have immunity for crimes they commit in office, up to and including political assassinations!
This is not how the leaders of free countries talk.
This is how dictators talk.

Recently a Trump supporter, Senator J.D. Vance, said on TV that if Trump becomes president again, he does not have to obey the Supreme Court.
This would destroy one of the critical checks and balances at the heart of our American system of government.
This is not how honorable Senators of a free country talk.
This is how defenders of dictatorship talk.

Now Elise Stefanik is saying on TV that if she had been in Mike Pence’s place on Jan. 6, 2021, she would have ignored court decisions, ignored the will of the American people, and broken the law to keep Trump in power after he lost the election.
This is not how honorable representatives of a free country talk.
This is how defenders of dictatorship talk.

If the people of America want to preserve our free government, we have to go to the polls every chance we get and defeat dangerous people like Trump, J.D. Vance, and Elise Stefanik.

Even General US Grant Could Act Like a Nazi Sometimes

This morning I read a very interesting article in the best religious liberty magazine in the world. To my astonishment and pain this article is about one of my heroes….

I believe that General Ulysses S. Grant was a great American and a good man who did many good things in his life. Like all good men, he also did some bad things in his life.

One time when Grant’s brain train careened crazily off the tracks was in 1862. At that time Grant was a general in the Union Army fighting against the Confederate traitors. Some cotton traders at that time were violating U.S. regulations in a way that was harming the Union Army.

In an idiotically incompetent effort to deal with this problem Grant issued the following order: “The Jews, as a class, violating every regulation of trade . . . are hereby expelled from the department.”

WHAT?

There are a whole bunch of problems with this order. First, it is brutally antisemitic, and antisemitism, like all prejudices, is always immoral. Prejudices are also always bizarrely stupid.

Let’s think about this order to see just how bizarrely stupid it is.
First, what is the problem?
The problem is that some cotton traders are violating regulations.
Second, what is the order?
The order is to expel all Jews from the area controlled by Grant’s army.

Why is this bizarrely stupid?
Consider:
Many Jews in this area are not cotton traders at all, so why are they being punished?
Some Jews in this area, who are cotton traders, may be obeying the regulations, so why are they being punished?
Some traders who are violating the regulations are not Jews, so how come they are NOT being punished and are allowed to get away with their crimes?

I don’t know if Grant was just unusually drunk the day he issued this order, but obviously a more intelligent and useful order would have been something like: “Any cotton traders in this department who are disobeying the trading regulations shall be punished in accordance with the law.” See how this order avoids asinine prejudices AND, as a bonus, addresses the actual problem we are trying to solve?

Some Jews were expelled after Grant’s order was issued, but, fortunately, Abraham Lincoln quickly ordered the general to revoke the antisemitic proclamation and it was, therefore, revoked.

This story reminds us that even great and good people can do terrible things when they have too much power and their brains misfire. We have to make sure NO ONE has absolute power and that there are always checks and balances in place to protect the rights of the people.

By 1868 Grant admitted that his order had been wrong. During his presidency Grant went on to appoint more Jewish people to his administration than any president had before. Maybe trying to apologize for his wartime blunder….

Grant made a bad mistake and learned from it. We should learn from Grant’s mistake, so we don’t make mistakes like this now.
